How to hide MICR line on check

ezCheckPrinting software is very flexible. Users can print checks on blank check stock and pre-printed check. Users can customize the check layout easily too.

 

Followings are the guides to hide the MICR line (Accounting number, bank account and check number) when you print a check

 

·         If you just want to hide this line, you can click the top menu "Settings->Layout setup" to open layout set up screen. Then uncheck the option "Display MICR line" at the bottom of this screen and save your change.

 

·         If you need to write check on the pre-printed blank check, you can click the top menu "Settings->Check setup" to open Check Setup screen.     State Government Tax Collections Increase $56 Billion in 2011

    Good News! Census Bureau recent press release states that "Overall government tax collections for states increased $55.7 billion to $757.2 billion in fiscal year 2011". 

     

    Corporate net income tax revenue was at $40.2 billion, up 9.4 percent, while tax revenue on individual income was at $259.1 billion, up 9.8 percent. General sales tax revenue was at $234.5 billion, up 5.4 percent. Corporate net income tax revenue, individual income tax revenue and general sales tax revenue comprised 70.5 percent of all state government tax collections nationally.

     

    All 50 states saw an increase in total tax revenue in fiscal year 2011, led by North Dakota (44.5 percent), Alaska (22.4 percent), Illinois (15.3 percent), and New Mexico (15.1 percent).

    How to Handle Payroll Tasks for Both W2 Employees and 1099 Contractors

    EzPaycheck payroll software is very flexible. It can handle the paychecks for both employees and contractors easily. Since employer does not need to withhold taxes from contractors’ paychecks, we would like to suggest you add the second account to handle the paychecks for 1099 contractors. (EzPaycheck can support multiple accounts with no extra charge) 

    Step 1: Set up the first company account for W-2 employees.

     Step 2: Set up the second company account for 1099 contractors.

    • Click the ezPaycheck top menu “Company->Duplicate current account” to duplicate current account to handle paychecks for 1099 contractor. 
    •  You can switch the current account easily by click the top menu “Company->Select Company”.         
    • When you add a contractor, you need to uncheck all the tax options. Then ezPaycheck will not withhold taxes from the paychecks.

    Note:

    If you don't like to add the second company account to handle 1099 contractors, you can also use the MICS check function to write checks for 1099 contractors quickly. You can click the left menu "Checks->MICS Checks". Click the "Add new check" button, enter the "Payee Name" and "Amount", then save this check by clicking the "SAVE" button.

    Small Business Payroll Solution: How to Handle SDI Tax?

    ezPaycheck payroll software is very flexible. With ezPaycheck, user can easily add a new deduction to handle SDI Tax, IRA plan, Garnishment, Donation, Dependent Care, Flexible Account or other local taxes.

     

    Here are the steps on how to add a SDI Tax:

    • Step 1: Add a new deduction

    1. Start ezPaycheck, click the left menu “Company Settings->Deductions” to  open Company Deduction Setup screen.

    2. Check one Customized deduction item, then clicked the button behind it to open  Deduction Details sceen. 

    3. Input the new name "SDI" for the Description field. 

    4. If this is a deduction by percent,  you can check "Deduction in percentage of wage" option box and enter the value. Otherwise, leave it unchecked.

    You also need to enter the uplimit for this deduction.

    For example: The 2012 CA SDI tax rate is 1.0 percent (.010) of SDI taxable wages per employee, per year. This includes the rate for PFL. The maximum tax is $955.85 per employee, per year.

    5. Check other tax options 

    6. Click the "Save" button and closed Deduction details page. 

    7. Click "save" button on Company Deduction Setup form to update the database.

     

    • Step 2: Update employee profile

    1. Select one employee from employee list and edit his deduction option. 

    2. Enter the amount or percent value.  

    3. Click "next" until  the last page, then click the "Finish" button to save the change.

    • Step 3: Generate a new check 

    When you generate the new check, you will see this new SDI Tax on paycheck

    2012 Michigan Tax Rate Repealed

    Withholding rate unchanged for Michigan workers after Oct. 1, 2011

    The withholding Rate reduction scheduled to take place on Oct. 1, 2011, was repealed by Public Act 38 of 2011. Therefore, the income tax rate will remain 4.35% and withholding tables will remain unchanged.

    The Persoanal Exemption Amount increased to $3,700.

    What Is New with 2012 Social Security Tax

    Nearly 160 million workers will benefit from the extension of the reduced payroll tax rate that has been in effect for 2011. IRS required that employers should implement the new payroll tax rate as soon as possible in 2012 but not later than Jan. 31, 2012.

     

    Following are the instructions from Notice 1036

     

    The employee tax rate for social security is 4.2% on wages paid and tips received before March 1, 2012. The employee tax rate for social security increases to 6.2% on wages paid and tips received after February 29, 2012. The employer tax rate for social security remains unchanged at 6.2%. The social security wage base limit is $110,100. The Medicare tax rate is 1.45% each for the employee and employer, unchanged from 2011. There is no wage base limit for Medicare tax.

     

    Employers should implement the 4.2% employee social security tax rate as soon as possible, but not later than January 31, 2012. After implementing the 4.2% rate, employers should make an offsetting adjustment in a subsequent pay period to correct any overwithholding of social security tax as soon as possible, but not later than March 31, 2012.

    2012 Indiana County Tax Rate Changed

    State of Indiana published the changes of county tax for resident and non-resident on Dec 1, 2011.  The employee deduction is $1,000 and each qualified dependent deduction is $1,500 which are unchanged. Carroll County resident tax rate changes to 0.015039; Hendricks County non-resident tax rate changes to 0.005; Jasper County resident tax rate changes to 0.03114; Martin County resident tax rate changes to 0.015; Tipton County non-resident tax rate changes to 0.0158. All the other county tax rate keeps unchanged.

    How to enter YTD payroll data?

    YTD means Year-to-date. It is a period from the beginning of the current year, and continues up to the present day. The YTD information on the check stubs will update automatically each time you add a new paycheck.

     

    This YTD entry feature is for users who start ezPaycheck in mid-year. (If you start ezPaycheck from Jan 1, you do not need to enter YTD manually.)

     

    For example, company ABC handles paychecks for employee Ryan Smith manually from 1/1/2011 to 6/30/2011. They plan to use ezPaycheck from 7/1/2011-7/15/2011 pay period. So instead of entering the old checks one by one, they can enter the YTD summary data here.

     

    You should add the YTD data first before you generate a new paycheck. So you can see the correct YTD data on paycheck stubs.

    UPS Follows FedEx and increases rates for 2012

    11/18/2011, Atlanta-based UPS -- the world's largest package delivery company -- announced a rate hike for most of its shipping services, which will take effect Jan. 2, 2012, according to Reuters. The new rates represent a net increase of 4.9% over 2011 rates for ground and air shipments, according to UPS. Ground package rates will increase 5.9% less a 1% decrease in the fuel surcharge, and Air services and U.S.-originated international shipments will increase 5.9%, less a 2% fuel surcharge decrease.

    UPS also increased its Next Day Air Freight and UPS 2nd Day Air Freight rates for shipments within and between the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico by 5.9 percent, with UPS 3 Day Freight rates remaining unchanged.

    In September, Memphis-based FedEx announced it would increase shipping rates for FedEx Express by a net average of 3.9% for U.S. domestic, U.S. export and U.S. import services effective January 2, 2012.

    In Octobor, the US Postal Service (USPS) also announced stamp prices will rise by one cent – to 45 cents – starting January 22, 2012

    IRS Increases 401(k) Limits For Year 2012

    IRS Increases 401(k) Limits to $17,000 in 2012, up from $16,500 this year. The increase is required by law to adjust for inflation. The ceiling hadn't grown since 2009 because inflation had been too low to trigger an increase.

    Highlights include:

     

    • The elective deferral (contribution) limit for employees who participate in 401(k), 403(b), most 457 plans, and the federal government’s Thrift Savings Plan is increased from $16,500 to $17,000.
    • The catch-up contribution limit for those aged 50 and over remains unchanged at $5,500.
    • The deduction for taxpayers making contributions to a traditional IRA is phased out for singles and heads of household who are covered by a workplace retirement plan and have modified adjusted gross incomes (AGI) between $58,000 and $68,000, up from $56,000 and $66,000 in 2011.  For married couples filing jointly, in which the spouse who makes the IRA contribution is covered by a workplace retirement plan, the income phase-out range is $92,000 to $112,000, up from $90,000 to $110,000.  For an IRA contributor who is not covered by a workplace retirement plan and is married to someone who is covered, the deduction is phased out if the couple’s income is between $173,000 and $183,000, up from $169,000 and $179,000.
    • The AGI phase-out range for taxpayers making contributions to a Roth IRA is $173,000 to $183,000 for married couples filing jointly, up from $169,000 to $179,000 in 2011.  For singles and heads of household, the income phase-out range is $110,000 to $125,000, up from $107,000 to $122,000.  For a married individual filing a separate return who is covered by a retirement plan at work, the phase-out range remains $0 to $10,000.
    • The AGI limit for the saver’s credit (also known as the retirement savings contributions credit) for low-and moderate-income workers is $57,500 for married couples filing jointly, up from $56,500 in 2011; $43,125 for heads of household, up from $42,375; and $28,750 for married individuals filing separately and for singles, up from $28,250.

    How can I customize the payee address on check?

    Question: I Have QuickBooks envelopes. How come when I put a QuickBooks check printed on a blank check i printed on ezCheckPrinting program I can’t see the person's name i want to mail it to. It seems as though the payee address is too high. I see the street and city but I can’t see the person's name in the window of the envelope. 

    Answer: With ezCheckPrinting software, you can customize the check format easily. Followings are the steps to customize payee address. 

    1. Start ezCheckPrinting

    2. Click the top menu "Settings->Layout setup" to open Layout setup screen.

    3. Select Payee Address from Item picker list. Select payee address on check with your mouse and move it to your target location.
