How to Calculate 2014 Federal Income Withhold Manually

    by admin 10. January 2014 06:44

EzPaycheck small business payroll software saves employers' time by simplifying payroll tax calculation, paycheck printing and tax reporting. However if you like to calculate the taxes manually, you can find the step by step guide below

    For example:

Karen is the employee of company ABC. She lives in Arizona. Her withholding rate is single/withhold at a single rate.  She has two allowances and no extra withholds.  She gets paid $10 per hour biweekly.  She works 64 hours for each biweekly pay period.

Followings are the steps to calculate the federal tax:

    1. Gross pay for each paycheck:

For each pay period, the gross pay is $640

    2. Deduction for each paycheck:
The standard deduction is $3,950 per year (For Year 2014).
    She can get total $3950*2=$7900
For each pay period the deduction is: $7900/26=$303.85

    3. Taxable income for each paycheck
So for each paycheck, the taxable income is: 640-303.85=$336.15

    4. Federal tax
    (336.15-87.00) * 10%=249.15*10%=$24.92

How to Edit or Correct a Paycheck after It Has Been Created

    by admin 15. August 2013 04:36

Editing a paycheck may cause tax calculation problem. So we removed this feature from ezPaycheck Payroll Software many years ago.

    - If you need to change MEMO part on paycheck only
You can click the check from check list, then click "VIEW" button. You can add/edit MEMO there.

    - If you need to change other information on paycheck, you need to delete this check and generate it again.
You can reset the current check number by clicking the left menu "checks->check setup". Then change the current check number if you need to reuse the same check number.

When must an employer withhold Additional Medicare Tax

    by admin 12. August 2013 05:37

EzPaycheck 2013 payroll software has been updated to handle the Additional Medicare Tax Automatically. The new version is available for free test drive at http://www.halfpricesoft.com/payroll_software_download.asp

Here are some FAQs about the Additional Medicare Tax.

When must an employer withhold Additional Medicare Tax?
The statute requires an employer to withhold Additional Medicare Tax on wages it pays to an employee in excess of $200,000 in a calendar year, beginning January 1, 2013. An employer has this withholding obligation even though an employee may not be liable for Additional Medicare Tax because, for example, the employee’s wages together with that of his or her spouse do not exceed the $250,000 threshold for joint return filers. Any withheld Additional Medicare Tax will be credited against the total tax liability shown on the individual’s income tax return (Form 1040).

When does Additional Medicare Tax start?
Additional Medicare Tax applies to wages and compensation above a threshold amount received after December 31, 2012 and to self-employment income above a threshold amount received in taxable years beginning after December 31, 2012.

What is the rate of Additional Medicare Tax?
    The rate is 0.9 percent

When are individuals liable for Additional Medicare Tax?
An individual is liable for Additional Medicare Tax if the individual’s wages, compensation, or self-employment income (together with that of his or her spouse if filing a joint return) exceed the threshold amount for the individual’s filing status:

    Filing Status

    Threshold Amount

    Married filing jointly

    $250,000

    Married filing separately

    $125,000

    Single

    $200,000

Head of household (with qualifying person)

    $200,000

    Qualifying widow(er) with dependent child

    $200,000

What wages are subject to Additional Medicare Tax?
All wages that are currently subject to Medicare Tax are subject to Additional Medicare Tax if they are paid in excess of the applicable threshold for an individual’s filing status. For more information on what wages are subject to Medicare Tax, see the chart, Special Rules for Various Types of Services and Payments, in section 15 of Publication 15, (Circular E), Employer’s Tax Guide.

Why is there no federal withholding taken out of my paycheck?

    by admin 5. June 2013 04:41

Question: I have an employee. She is single with 3 allowances for federal tax withholding. She is paid at $21.79/hour and 21 hours per pay period. We paid her twice a month. I used your ezPaycheck payroll software to generate the paycheck.  However, I find $0 federal tax withhold on her paycheck. Is it correct? Why?

Answer: Your employee can claim allowances on the W-4. Each allowance will lower her taxable income.  The more allowances she claims the less federal income tax she pays; the less she claims, the more federal tax she pays.

The standard deduction is $3,900 per year (For Year 2013).

For your employee, her taxable income is not high enough to withhold federal tax. Here are the step by step calculations.

    1. Gross pay for each paycheck:

    $21.79*21 hours= $457.59

For each pay period, the gross pay is $457.59

    2. Deductions for each paycheck:

The standard deduction is $3,900 per year (For Year 2013).

    She can get total deductions

    $3,900   X             3 =          $11,700

For each pay period the deduction is:

    $11,700                 /              24           = $487.50

    3. Taxable income for each paycheck

So for each paycheck, the taxable income is:

    457.59   -              $487.50                 =             - $29.91

So for this employee, her taxable income is $0. So you will see $0 federal tax on this paycheck.

How to Calculate 2013 Federal Income Tax Manually

    by admin 17. January 2013 16:17

EzPaycheck small business software saves employers' time by simplifying payroll tax calculation, paycheck printing and tax reporting.

The standard deduction is $3,900 per year (For Year 2013).
    She can get total $3900*2=$7800
For each pay period the deduction is: $7800/26=$300

    3. Taxable income for each paycheck
So for each paycheck, the taxable income is: 640-300=$340.00

    4. Federal tax
    (340.00-85.00) * 10%=255*10%=$25.5
