Troubleshooting: How to Allow ezPaycheck Through Windows Security

If your Windows system is blocking ezPaycheck from launching or preventing it from saving your employee data, Windows Defender or Ransomware Protection may be misidentifying the application.

Please follow the steps below to safely grant ezPaycheck the permissions it needs to operate smoothly.

Default File Locations for ezPaycheck

To complete the steps below, you will need to point Windows to the exact folders where ezPaycheck is installed and where your data is stored:

  • Application file
  • ezPaycheck.exe

  • Application Folder (Program):
  • C:\Program Files (x86)\Halfpricesoft\ezPaycheck

  • Database Folder (Data):
  • C:\Users\Public\Documents\Halfpricesoft\ezPaycheck

Part 1: How to Add ezPaycheck to Windows Defender Exclusions

If Windows Defender prevents the software from starting up, adding an exclusion tells Windows that the application is safe to run.

1. Click your Windows Start menu, type "Windows Security" in the search bar, and press Enter.

2. From the main security dashboard, click on "Virus & threat protection".

3. Look for the "Virus & threat protection settings" section and click the "Manage settings" link.

4. Scroll down near the bottom of the page to the "Exclusions" heading and click "Add or remove exclusions".

5. Click the + Add an exclusion button and choose File.

6. Navigate to your application folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Halfpricesoft\ezPaycheck

7. Select the ezPaycheck.exe file and click Open to save the exclusion.

Part 2: How to Allow ezPaycheck Through Ransomware Protection

Windows features a security tool called "Controlled Folder Access" to protect your files. If this feature is active, it will often block ezPaycheck from saving or updating your payroll data files inside the Public Documents folder.

1. Click your Windows Start menu, type "Windows Security" in the search bar, and press Enter.

2. From the main security dashboard, click on "Virus & threat protection".

3. Scroll to the very bottom of the page to find the "Ransomware protection" section, then click Manage ransomware protection.

4. Look at the toggle switch under "Controlled folder" access:

  • If it is turned Off, no further action is required.

  • If it is turned On, click the link directly underneath it labeled Allow an app through Controlled folder access.
5. Click the + Add an allowed app button and select Browse all apps.

6. Navigate to your application folder: C:\Program Files (x86)\Halfpricesoft\ezPaycheck

7. Select ezPaycheck.exe and click Open to add it to your trusted application whitelist.
