How Allowances Work in This State

Kansas allows personal allowances similar to old federal rules. An employee starts with 1 for themselves (if not claimed as dependent). If married and the spouse does not work, the employee may claim 1 additional allowance for the spouse (but if both spouses work, they are advised not to double-claim this). A head of household can claim 2 allowances (instead of 1) for that status. Each dependent qualifies for 1 allowance. Kansas does not list extra allowances for age or blindness on form K-4.

Allowance Breakdown

ComponentAllowancesNotes
Yourself1 allowanceIf not claimed as dependent
Spouse1 allowanceIf spouse does not work (don't double-claim if both work)
Head of Household2 allowancesInstead of 1 for HOH status
Each Dependent1 allowancePer dependent

Total Allowances Formula

Total Allowances = Yourself + Spouse (if applicable) + HOH Bonus + Dependents

Special Notes

All personal exemptions on the KS return are $2,250 each; the form keeps it simple with one per person. No additional allowances for age 65+ or blindness.

  1. 1

Subtract the biweekly Thrift Savings Plan contribution from the gross biweekly wages.

  2. 2

Subtract the nontaxable biweekly Federal Health Benefits Plan payment(s) (includes dental and vision insurance program, and flexible spending account - health care and dependent care deductions) from the amount computed in Step 1.

  3. 3

Multiply the adjusted gross biweekly wages times 26 to obtain the annual wages.

  4. 4

Determine the exemption allowance by applying the following guideline and subtract this amount from the result of step 3 to compute the taxable income.

Exemption Allowance = $2,320 × Number of Exemptions Claimed on Federal Form K-4

  5. 5

Apply the taxable income computed in step 4 to the tax withholding table to determine the Kansas tax withholding.

  6. 6

Divide the annual Kansas tax withholding by 26 to obtain the biweekly Kansas tax withholding.
