ACA 1095 IRS submission TPE1204 Error: Invalid characters

Error [TPE1204]

[TPE1204] Our system has detected a potential threat in the Form file and it cannot be transmitted. Please review the XML standards outlined in Section 3 of Publication 5258, AIR Submission Composition and Reference Guide.
Or
IRS does not allow "--" or "&&" or other special characters.

Reason

You entered the invalid character(s) in address, company name or other fields on 1095/1094C or 1095/1094B. IRS does not allow "--" or "&&" or "#" or other special characters.

For example: IRS system can accept single "-". However, the IRS system cannot accept "--". If you have "--" in your XML file, you may see such error when uploading ACA forms to IRS system.

Solution

1. Find which form is with the error.

You can open your XML file by NotePad and search for "--" or "&&" or "#" or other special characters.

2. Start ez1095 and remove the special character(s) from 1095 or 1094 form..

For example: You can change "--" to "-". You can change "#123" to "Apt 123".

Important: Do not edit the ACA XML files directly - doing so will cause a checksum error and prevent successful submission!

3. File submission again
